The Trump administration is also seeking a vote on its proposal in the more powerful U.N. Security Council.
The US has put pressure on Ukraine to withdraw its European-backed UN resolution calling for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory.

The United States is sticking to its proposal, which does not mention Moscow’s invasion, a U.S. official and a European diplomat said Sunday , the Associated Press reported .
Ukraine has refused to withdraw its draft resolution, and the UN General Assembly will vote on it on February 24, the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, two European diplomats said.
The 193-nation General Assembly will then vote on the U.S.-drafted resolution, according to diplomats and a U.S. official.
The Trump administration is also seeking a vote on its proposal in the more powerful UN Security Council. China, which holds the presidency of the council this month, has scheduled a vote on the US resolution for Monday afternoon.
“The dueling resolutions – the first since the invasion – underscore tensions between the United States, Ukraine and European countries in the five weeks since President Trump took office and began talks with Russia after years of isolation in an attempt to end the war. European leaders were dismayed that they and Ukraine were excluded from exploratory talks between the United States and Russia last week,” the article said.
The assembly vote showed strong global opposition to the war, and it will be closely watched to see if that support has waned – and to gauge support for Trump’s efforts to end the war quickly.
A European diplomat said there had been intense lobbying and arm-twisting on competing resolutions. A US official added that the US was trying to force Ukraine and the Europeans to abandon their project.
The resolution on Ukraine, co-sponsored by the 27-nation European Union, refers to the “full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation” and recalls the need to implement all previous Assembly resolutions “adopted in response to the aggression against Ukraine.”
It highlights the General Assembly’s demand that Russia “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders” and its demand that all military actions cease immediately.
And it calls for “de-escalation, a rapid end to hostilities and a peaceful resolution of the war against Ukraine.”
The very brief U.S. draft resolution acknowledges “the tragic loss of life throughout the Russia-Ukraine conflict” and “calls for an immediate end to the conflict and further urges lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.” It makes no mention of Moscow’s invasion.
