Ryabkov said a quick ceasefire would lead to an equally quick resumption of hostilities in the future.

Russia has hinted that it will resume hostilities if a short-term ceasefire is concluded with Ukraine . In particular, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that Russia is seeking a long-term peace agreement on Ukraine that is aimed at eliminating the “root causes of the conflict.” At the same time, according to him, a quick ceasefire will lead to an equally quick resumption of hostilities in the future.

He said Russia recognizes the American side’s desire to move toward a rapid ceasefire.

“But… a ceasefire without a long-term settlement is a path to a rapid resumption of hostilities and a resumption of conflict with even more serious consequences, including for Russian-American relations. We do not want this,” he said.

He also said that the Russian-American talks in Riyadh had not brought any greater clarity to President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine.
