The US State Department approved the sale of equipment to Ukraine to maintain the Hawk missile system and related equipment to foreign military companies in the amount of $108.1 million.

This is stated in the State Department’s statement. “This sale will contribute to the achievement of US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a partner country that is a driving force for political and economic stability in Europe,” the State Department commented on the decision.

They noted that this sale will improve Ukraine’s capabilities to counter current and future threats, further equipping it with the means to perform self-defense tasks and ensure regional security through a more powerful integrated air defense system.

As a reminder, the Hawk is an American medium-range anti-aircraft missile system (AMS) that was developed to destroy aircraft. It was later modified to intercept missiles in flight.

The complex was adopted for service in the United States in 1960. Since then, the air defense system has undergone several modernizations that have prevented the complex from becoming too obsolete.

Last summer, the U.S. State Department approved the sale of two packages of weapons and equipment to Ukraine for a total of $322 million. The sale included HAWK Phase III missile systems, support systems, and related equipment worth approximately $172 million.

Western analysts estimate the probability of hitting an air target with the complex at 85%.

  1. Every missile system is good for the defence of Ukraine, but this system stopped being produced in 2000 and was replaced by the Patriot system. Is this the US just selling off more surplus junk from its dusty warehouses?
