Ukrainian Defense Forces have stabilized the situation along the Pokrovsk axis and, in some areas, regained tactical initiative from Russian occupying forces, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said on May 6.
He noted that the Pokrovsk direction remains one of the most difficult sectors on the front line.
“However, thanks to the courage and skillful actions of our Defense Forces troops, we managed to stabilize the situation in this operational zone in Donetsk Oblast and, in some areas, reclaim the tactical initiative,” Syrskyi said.
During a working visit to the front lines, Syrskyi presented honorary awards from the Commander-in-Chief to servicemembers of the 425th Separate Assault Regiment Skala.
He described the unit as one of those effectively using active defense tactics to destroy enemy forces.
“Thanks to Skala’s efforts, Ukraine has repeatedly regained control over territory seized by the enemy. That was the case in 2022 in Izyum during the Kharkiv counteroffensive, and again this spring near the village of Shevchenko, outside Pokrovsk,” he said.
On April 20, Ukraine’s Khortytsia operational and strategic group reported that Russian troops had suffered heavy losses along the Pokrovsk front and were being forced to retreat.
However, on April 30, Syrskyi said Russia had significantly increased the intensity of combat operations. He added that Russian forces were concentrating their main efforts on the Pokrovsk axis in an attempt to reach the administrative border of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
Later, Ukrainian military sources reported that Russian troops still aimed to reach Dnipropetrovsk Oblast by May 9.
On May 2, analysts at DeepState said that Russian forces had captured the village of Tarasivka in Donetsk Oblast, along the Pokrovsk axis.
