If Ukraine stopped exporting food and consumed everything domestically, its pre-war harvests alone would have been enough to feed around 400 million people. Even under today’s war-strained conditions, Ukraine still produces enough to feed a quarter to a third of a billion people. That is many times larger than its own population, which is why Ukraine’s role in global food security cannot be overstated.

Think about it: Ukraine can feed half of the European Union. Right now, it helps keep North Africa and Asia from hunger. Handing this agricultural power to Russia would be a catastrophic mistake. With control over Ukrainian food supplies, Moscow could weaponize hunger the same way it once weaponized gas, threatening Africa with famine like it was threatening EU with cold winters. It could choke exports, spark food shortages, and unleash waves of desperate people fleeing toward Europe. And Europe, facing a humanitarian catastrophe on its doorstep, would have no choice but to accept them.

Let me remind you that when Russia started blockade of Ukraine in 2022, WEAT stock price rose from 7.71 USD to 11.50 USD, which already made food expensive for many poor people. But Ukraine found the way to destroy half of Russian Black Sea Navy and made the remnants of it hide in a safe place. Current price is 4.18.

And then there is climate change. As farmland shrinks in Africa, mass migration is inevitable. Ukraine, with its fertile soil and relatively stable agricultural capacity, is one of the few regions that can still guarantee large-scale harvests. Losing it to Russian control would not only destabilize Europe, it would undermine the world’s ability to feed itself in the decades ahead.

Ukraine’s food is not just Ukraine’s strength. It is the world’s lifeline.

Thank you for this post. Very helpful information. The message is very clear. However, many it would seem are unaware of this. Along with minerals, the resources Ukraine possess are significant for the rest of the world. I had not myself understood the SCALE of this until now.
