Germany, in cooperation with Denmark and the Netherlands, is preparing to hand over 77 Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks to the Ukrainian army.
This is reported by Spiegel with reference to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius . The Minister of Defense announced the transfer during a meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine. They want to do it as soon as possible.
In addition to tanks, Kyiv will receive an additional 12 Panzerhaubitze 2000 howitzers for 150 million euros. Six machines will be sent to Ukraine this year, and another six – in the next. Earlier it became known that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi arrived at the Ramstein air base to take part in the meeting of the Contact Group.
Leopard 1A5 – help
This tank is one of the versions of the old Leopard 1, which began to be developed back in the 50s. When creating the MBT, the issue of its reservation was put last, because it was believed that there was no real protection against cumulative ammunition.
At the same time, Leopard 1 received good firepower and acceptable mobility. Thus, although the tank is now morally obsolete, it can still be used effectively in some situations.
We will remind, in July, Ukraine received a batch of Leopard 1A5 tanks from Germany and Denmark – at that time it was about eight units of combat equipment.
At the same time, the total number of tanks of this type received from Germany amounted to more than 50 units at that time. And in general, the countries of the West transferred up toΒ 100 tanks of the Leopard 1 typeΒ to Kyiv at the time of May .
