The number of officially employed Ukrainians decreased to 9 million people from 11.5 million in 2021.
Due to the war, the departure of Ukrainians abroad and internal migration, there is a personnel shortage and structural unemployment in the country.
As Deputy Minister of Economy Tatyana Berezhnaya reported during a meeting of the leadership of the Ministry of Economy with representatives of the IMF mission in Ukraine, if in 2021 the official labor market numbered 11.5 million workers, then in 2023 this figure decreased to 9 million officially employed.
“According to preliminary calculations, in order to ensure annual GDP growth of 7% until 2030, we need an additional 4.5 million workers,” she noted.
According to her, work on the project to modernize labor legislation is currently being completed. Its adoption will contribute to improving the situation on the labor market.
Also during the conversation, the mission representatives were told in detail about the projects that are components of the “Made in Ukraine” economic policy. The policy is designed to stimulate the development of production in Ukraine, to increase the share of industry in the country’s GDP. At the same time, it will comprehensively contribute to the solution of other tasks facing the state. In particular, the return of Ukrainians who have left abroad.
“When Ukrainians start thinking about returning, they ask themselves: Where will I live? Where will I work? Projects within the Made in Ukraine program, such as eHome, grant programs for starting a business, microgrants, production support programs that help create jobs, provide answers to these questions,” said First Deputy Minister of Economy Oleksiy Sobolev.

Seeing there are around 5 million Ukrainians living in the EU, it’s not surprising. Maybe it would be in the best interest of the EU to make sure this war ends quickly, instead of throwing up obstacles one after another, then Ukrainians can go home.
At least the adult Ukrainian males squatting in Europe should finally be sent home. I doubt that most of them got to Europe legally in the first place.
