Ukraine bought a batch of ATACMS missiles and tracked versions of “Haymars” from Turkey

These are outdated weapons that the Turks are trying to get rid of.

Turkey has sold Ukraine 70 M39 ATACMS ballistic missiles and 12 M270 multiple launch rocket systems (tracked version of the “Haymars”), as well as tens of thousands of cluster munitions, according to the official minutes of the US Congress for August 6.

Since the weapons are American-made, the U.S. State Department has issued a permit for their resale. In such cases, Congress must also be notified.

It is noted that the initial cost of this weapon was $255.9 million. The document does not state how much Ukraine bought this weapon from Turkey for.

According to the report, in total, Turkey will sell to Ukraine:

  • 12 M270 MLRS launchers capable of launching ATACMS ballistic missiles and GMLRS precision-guided rockets;
  • 70 ATACMS ballistic missiles version M39;
  • 2,524 unguided 227 mm M26 rockets with DPICM cluster warheads (launched from the Haymars or M270);
  • 47,000 M509A1 203 mm cluster artillery shells, suitable in particular for Soviet-made 2S7 “Pion” self-propelled guns.

The document states that the resale is taking place in light of Turkey’s desire to get rid of its stockpiles of obsolete weapons.

Direct deliveries are planned to begin immediately after the completion of formal procedures for approving the resale with Congress.

According to “Military” , the M39 ATACMS, which appears in the agreement, is the first serial version of the missile. It has a maximum range of about 165 km, is equipped with an autonomous inertial guidance system with laser gyroscopes and does not have a duplicate correction system based on the GPS satellite signal. The missile has relatively poor accuracy, which, however, is compensated by a powerful warhead weighing 560 kilograms. It carries 950 cluster submunitions designed to destroy manpower, unarmored equipment, air defense systems and other flat targets.

  1. Turkey should’ve donated this stuff to Ukraine, but Turkey is a shithole and should not be a NATO member.

    • It looks like they also did this the day after Congress goes on an August recess. But, I’m not sure if Congress has to sign off on the transfer or just be notified.
