US President Donald Trump said he trusts Russian leader Vladimir Putin and is confident that he will not abandon his intention to conclude a peace agreement in the Russia-Ukraine war. According to Politico , Trump said this while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One.
“I don’t think he’s going to go back on his word. You’re talking about Putin. I don’t think he’s going to go back on his word. I’ve known him for a long time. We’ve always gotten along well,” Trump said.
Earlier in an interview with NBC News, Trump also expressed dissatisfaction with Putin’s criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing that he was “furious” when Putin “started undermining Zelensky’s authority, because it’s happening in the wrong place, you know?”
He added that “the new leadership means you won’t have a deal for a long time.” At the same time, Trump said that Putin would still have to make a deal with Zelensky.
“Some of the things he’s said in the last day or two are related to Zelensky, because when he considers Zelensky to be untrustworthy, he has to make a deal with him whether you like him or not. So I was unhappy with that. But I think he’ll behave well,” he noted.
He also said that there is a “psychological deadline” for Putin to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.
