Recently, US President Donald Trump  exempted Russia from major new sanctions imposed by a law he had previously signed. As a result, the aggressor country, guilty of daily war crimes, was rewarded by Washington.

As  Le Monde reports , Trump has effectively betrayed Ukraine. Faced with the prospect of defeat in the November 3 midterm elections, largely due to inflation caused by his war against Iran, the US president decided to sacrifice the Ukrainians, clinging to the illusion that purchasing Russian diesel fuel would lower prices at US gas stations.

The publication emphasized that now, fueled by American money, the Russian military machine will be able to operate at full capacity. The consequences of Trump’s decisions will be measured in human lives.

Journalists noted that Trump recklessly embarked on a gamble in the form of a war with Iran, thereby serving the interests of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. This war led to a sharp rise in energy prices, giving Russia its first chance at survival.

The publication added that the US, in an attempt to protect its allies on the Arab side of the Persian Gulf from Iranian strikes, had expended large stockpiles of air defense missiles, which Ukraine sorely lacks. Moreover, Trump ignored intelligence reports indicating that the Iranian regime was receiving logistical support from Russia in this war.

When the US-Iran compromise on opening the Strait of Hormuz collapsed, and the subsequent spike in fuel prices, particularly diesel, sparked outrage in the US, Trump blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, claiming that Ukraine’s strikes on Russian refineries were the cause.

The publication emphasized that calls for Zelenskyy’s resignation, the energy deal with Russia, and reports of Starshield’s malfunctions in Ukraine serve Moscow’s interests, to the point that the world’s leading power is being reduced to a mere Kremlin assistant. The publication also believes that Trump’s argument that negotiations with Russia could distance it from China is repeatedly refuted by the facts.

Trump’s sympathy for Putin began long ago.

Journalists noted that Trump’s recent actions do not represent a strategic turnaround. The publication recalled that, even during the disastrous 2018 Helsinki summit, he shamefully aligned himself with Putin, and in August 2025, he met with the Russian dictator in Alaska, undermining all efforts aimed at isolating Putin politically.Read also:

The publication concluded that previously, US presidents proudly positioned themselves as “leaders of the free world,” but under Trump, the words “freedom” and “democracy” have disappeared from Washington’s lexicon.

Trump will continue to lift sanctions against Russia.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is pleased that US President Donald Trump has lifted sanctions. He added that the American leader will continue to lift sanctions against Russia.

The Ukrainian President believes the “diesel agreement” is only the first step. Zelenskyy also commented on Trump’s decision to lift sanctions against Russia, as stipulated by the law enacted by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Zelenskyy emphasized that he believes the Trump administration will consider this issue for several years, and the “diesel agreement” lifting Graham’s sanctions is not the end of the story.
