The document recognizes that the people of Greenland have the right to self-determination
Denmark and Greenland have signed a new security agreement with the US regarding Greenland , The Guardian reports .
US President Donald Trump called the deal “unprecedented” and said it would protect not only the US but also Europe. He also praised NATO, saying the alliance was stronger than ever.
The document contains a specific provision confirming the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark, as well as recognizing that the people of Greenland “are a people under international law who have the right to self-determination.”
The publication noted that the US also intends to modernize and expand its activities at the Pitufik space base in Greenland. It was this base that US Vice President J.D. Vance visited in 2025.
In addition, the US intends to establish military bases in Narsarsuaq and in Mesters-Vieg “in accordance with the terms and technical details to be mutually agreed upon by the parties.”
“The United States may establish additional defense zones in Greenland and strengthen its military operations or facilities,” the agreement states.
The agreement also stipulates that American aircraft can fly over and land anywhere in Greenland, including territorial waters. Separately, Denmark and Greenland have agreed to consider requests for the establishment of unmanned military facilities in Greenland outside the defense zones under accelerated government approval procedures.
The publication added that this agreement explicitly states that no state that is not a NATO member is allowed to create its own manned or unmanned military facilities in Greenland, as well as to ensure the permanent presence of armed forces in Greenland, unless otherwise agreed by the parties.
It also stipulates that no investment by a non-NATO partner country should allow for “control, significant influence, or access to classified information that could pose a threat to national security or public order.” This clause will be seen by the US as an attempt to discourage any interest from China or Russia. Another part of the agreement also talks about working together to counter the threat of espionage.
The publication emphasized that the agreement has no expiration date and also takes into account potentially relevant future scenarios, such as Greenland gaining independence in the future. It states that an independent Greenland would have to agree to remain in NATO and continue to implement all the agreements stipulated in the treaty.
Merz and Kosty’s reaction to the deal
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the Greenland agreement was good news for security and strengthened the NATO partnership.
“Good news for Greenland’s security: the agreement between Denmark, Greenland and the US strengthens our NATO partnership and security in the High North. Our partners can count on Germany’s support,” he emphasized.
European Council President António Costa congratulated Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen on concluding the agreement with the United States, saying it would strengthen security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic.
Trump and Greenland – important news

Nothing new here. There was already an agreement since 1951 with Greenland. Only the old bases will be reopend. A big nothing burger.
From what I gather, the only difference is Trump has his name on the agreement.
