A Republican senator from Utah has asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. after reports emerged that a Russian oligarch with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin paid for part of the president’s son’s wedding, Politico reports .
The publication noted that Senator John Curtis’s address, which appeared after the ProPublica publication, indicates a significant rift in relations between President Donald Trump and a member of his own party.
“Questions have arisen regarding President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr.,’s connections with foreign businessmen and his receipt of significant gifts, including a lavish wedding celebration on a private island hosted by Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, who reportedly visited China shortly before the gift was given as part of a delegation accompanying Vladimir Putin,” Curtis wrote in a Sept. 21 letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and the committee’s top Democrat, Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois.
Curtis explained that these concerns are exacerbated by Donald Trump Jr.’s active promotion of family-backed cryptocurrency projects, his ongoing international real estate deals tied to direct meetings with foreign heads of state, and reports of his investments in defense contracts.
The American senator, also noting the profits that the Trump family received from cryptocurrency transactions, indicated that this incident is part of a broader trend where relatives of US presidents may improperly use their proximity to power.
In addition to the investigation into Trump Jr., Curtis has asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena former President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, who has been at the center of numerous conflict-of-interest scandals for many years.
He said both men must testify “regarding their past business dealings, relationships with foreign individuals and organizations, gifts or other benefits they have received, and any instances in which their relationship with the president was used or perceived as a source of benefit.”
“The country should not tolerate the fact that one standard applies to the family of a Republican president and another to the family of a Democratic president. Congressional oversight should also not begin and end with the change of power in the White House,” Curtis believes.
The publication noted that in his statement, Trump noted that he “has no idea who Umar is,” that he “has never heard of him,” and that he “did not pay for Don and Bettina’s wedding, which took place in a completely different place and on a different day than the wedding.”
