In the April-June quarter, the EU purchased more gas from Russia than from the US.

Russia has been able to strengthen its position as a gas supplier to the European Union , overtaking the United States in terms of supply volumes.

As Die Welt reports , citing data from the Brussels-based consulting company Bruegel, for the first time in almost two years, EU countries imported more gas from Russia in one quarter than from the United States.

According to the company, in the quarter from April to June, the EU purchased 12.7 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia and 12.3 billion from the United States. At the same time, compared to the first quarter of 2024, supplies from Russia decreased slightly, while from the United States they decreased more sharply.

Russian gas in Europe

As UNIAN wrote, Turkey will help Russia at least partially return to the European gas market . Under the guise of a “Turkish mix” – mixed gas from different sources, about 7-8 billion cubic meters of gas are planned to be supplied to Europe. Nominally, Russia will account for 40% of this mix, but the real share may be higher.

It was also reported that European traders used only a fraction of Ukraine’s vast natural gas storage facilities in the summer of 2024.   Russian attacks have increased the risks, depriving the war-torn country of meager revenues.
