In the coming days, the leadership of Poland will discuss this idea with the Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Poland seeks to create an alliance with Great Britain to prevent possible betrayal of Ukraine when Donald Trump re-enters the White House, writes  The Times.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk plans to meet in the “coming days” with British opposition leader Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte as he worries about the possible impact of the US election results on military support for Ukraine.

The other day, Donald Trump Jr. posted a video on Instagram with an image of a sad Zelensky next to Trump and the caption: “POV: You have 38 days left before you lose your aid.”

Trump had a phone conversation with Putin, during which he urged him “not to escalate the war in Ukraine.” Shortly before that, Trump discussed the situation with Zelensky, assuring him of his support, although he repeatedly expressed doubts about the level of US aid to Ukraine and stated that he could reach a peace agreement “in 24 hours.”

Britain, Poland and France are seen as key countries that can prevent the new US administration from making a deal with Putin behind Ukraine’s back.

“The formed political landscape is a serious challenge for everyone, especially in connection with a possible agreement between the president of Russia and the new president of the United States, which is capable of ending the war,” Tusk said.

Tusk will meet Starmer in Warsaw or London in the coming week, and will also host Macron and Rutte in Poland to enlist the support of European partners. He also noted that the alliance will involve closer cooperation with the countries of Northern Europe and the Baltic States.

His initiative to form an alliance around Ukraine shows Europe’s concern that a peace deal with Putin could result in Ukraine losing territory and Kyiv’s forced neutrality. Tusk said:

“We will intensively coordinate cooperation with countries that share our vision of geopolitics and the situation in Ukraine. No one wants the escalation of the conflict, but also no one wants the weakening or even the surrender of Ukraine. This would be a fundamental threat to Poland and Polish interests.”

At the meeting with Zelenskyi in Budapest, Starmer assured of the “unwavering” support of Great Britain and readiness to intensify aid to Ukraine. After that, Zelensky spoke critically about some European countries, which, according to him, are “resolutely” pushing Ukraine to compromise.

EU diplomats see Britain, Poland and France as critical partners for maintaining European support amid Germany’s hesitancy, which has, for example, restrained Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied missiles to strike targets in Russia.

EU High Representative Josep Borrell arrived in Kyiv this weekend to express the EU’s support for Ukraine. “We will support Ukraine as much as possible,” he said.

Last week, one of Trump’s advisers said that Zelensky should abandon the idea of returning Crimea. Brian Lanza, a Republican strategist, said Trump would pursue a “realistic” vision of peace for Ukraine.

  1. Trumpkov Jr and Sr both refer to real conservatives who support Ukraine: Pompeo, Haley and Cheney, as “war-hawks.”
Unfortunately Starmer and Tusk don’t meet the Trumpkov “war hawk” criteria. They may well cobble something together, but it will be feeble. What they can and should do is help Ukraine in a real way.
Ukraine’s Black Sea coast is vital to its existence as a viable state. Accordingly, Mykolaiv and Odesa oblasts must be protected. The U.K. and Poland should provide air support for these oblasts and send one division each to Odesa and Mykolaiv respectively. Standing orders:
to shoot down hostile aircraft/missiles/drones and to attack putinaZi troops only if themselves attacked.

  2. The Kremlin has denied that Russian President Vladimir Putin has already called Donald Trump after his election victory. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismisses The Washington Post’s story as “pure fiction”.

According to Peskov, Putin has no concrete plans to call Trump. The Russian president said on Thursday that he was open to a phone conversation.

The Washington Post wrote, based on insiders, that Trump had asked not to escalate the war in Ukraine. The American election winner is also said to have indicated that he wanted to continue talks soon about a “quick solution to the war in Ukraine”.

“There was no conversation,” Peskov responds. He says that Russia will continue with the “special military operation” in Ukraine for the time being. According to the Kremlin spokesman, political leaders in Europe are still looking for a “strategic loss” for the Russians, but he also senses “nervousness” among European leaders about the election of Trump. The Republican is much more critical of financial and military aid to Ukraine than his predecessor Joe Biden.
