Drone Attack: One of russia’s Largest Oil Refineries in Leningrad Region Caught Fire

4.10.2025

Russia has complained about a nighttime drone attack on another Russian refinery. The drones flew to one of the largest oil refining enterprises in the Russian Federation – Kirishinefteorgsintez, 150 km from St. Petersburg.

The governor of the Leningrad region acknowledged the “fire in the Kirishi industrial zone” and stated that the “drones were shot down” and that there was no threat to people. Local residents, however, complain about the stench and the authorities’ disregard.

What is known

In Kirishi, Leningrad Oblast, located 800 km from the Ukrainian border, people complained about a drone attack. According to the Ukrainian monitoring channel Monitor, it turned out to be quite successful, and Russian oil refining has again “shrunk” somewhat.

“Kirishinefteorgsintez, Kirishi, Leningrad Region of the Russian Federation – arrival. 800 km from the state border. Daily hits at long distances continue,” the Telegram channel message states.

Russian publics also acknowledge the attack. In particular, the “Cheka-OGPU” reports about the attack on the Kirishi refinery.

And the independent Russian publication ASTRA, having analyzed footage of the fire after the explosions that appeared online, confirmed that it was the refinery that was on fire.

“The fire at the oil refinery in the city of Kirishi, Leningrad Region, on the night of October 4 is confirmed by eyewitness footage. ASTRA analyzed two photos from the scene that captured the fire. The first frame was taken in the area of Energetikov Street, 6. This is approximately 3.5 kilometers from the KINEF plant. According to ASTRA’s analysis, this particular enterprise is on fire in the footage,” the publication writes.

The second photo, according to journalists, was taken near the house at 10 Myru Street, next to the train station.

“It is approximately 3 kilometers from the KINEF plant. The Kirishinefteorgsintez refinery (KINEF) is burning directly behind the station,” ASTRA claims.

The publication recalled that the attacked plant is one of the largest Russian refineries. Therefore, it has already come into the field of view of the Ukrainian Defense Forces at least three times: in March and September of this year, as well as in March 2024.

Meanwhile, the network suggested that the fire probably occurred in the area of the ELOU-AVT-6 installation.

“ELOU-AVT-6″ is a primary oil refining unit. It includes the processes of electrical desalination (ELOU) of oil, atmospheric distillation (AT), vacuum distillation (VP) and secondary distillation and stabilization of gasoline. The design capacity for raw materials is 6 million tons per year. The products obtained: fuel gas, liquefied gas, straight-run gasoline fractions, straight-run diesel fuel fraction, vacuum gas oil and tar,” the “Crimean Wind” Telegram channel explained.

Judging by the footage that appeared online, a large-scale fire broke out at the plant. Even the regional governor, Oleksandr Drozdenko, had to admit this.

However, the Russian official limited himself to a general statement about a “fire in the industrial zone” and that “fire services have begun extinguishing it.” At the same time (around 03:30 in the morning, less than an hour after the announcement of the “danger of UAVs” in the region), he “calmed down” the Russians with a message about “air defense work on UAVs in Kirishi.”

And at 5 a.m., Drozdenko reported on the “shooting down” of seven drones at once and the “extinguishing of a fire in the industrial zone.”

On the occasion, the official reported that “according to Rospotrebnadzor, the environmental situation is normal, there are no exceedances of the MPC.”

However, not all residents of Kirishi believed Drozdenko’s statements. In the comments to his posts, many wrote that they counted 12, or even about 15 drones.

Others demanded “instructions” and complained about the suffocating stench that filled the settlement.

“The stench is terrible ! We’re burning! The factory is burning! The firefighters are running around like crazy! What’s going on? What should we do?” one of the commentators asked hysterically, who, by the way, never got an answer.

Judging by the published footage, the residents of Kirishi were frightened by the attack. But it did not prompt them to draw the right conclusions: instead of stopping the aggression against the neighboring state, they demand “to wipe Ukraine off the face of the earth.”

The exact consequences of the attack are still unknown.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the “destruction” of 117 UAVs overnight, including six over the Leningrad Region.

The affected refinery is among the top 5 largest Russian oil refineries

Kirishinefteorgsintez is one of the largest oil refining enterprises in Russia , and is among the top 5 oil refineries. It is a subsidiary of Surgutnaftogaz.

Its refining capacity is about 20.1 million tons of oil per year, making it the second largest refinery in the aggressor state: the enterprise is second only to the Omsk Oil Refinery.

It produces a wide range of petroleum products , including gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation fuel, and others.

This refinery is the main supplier of petroleum products for St. Petersburg, Leningrad, Novgorod and Pskov regions.

As OBOZ.UA wrote, the day before, on October 3, it became known that the Orsk oil refinery in Russia was attacked. The enterprise is located 1,400 km from the Ukrainian border. Due to the attack, the plant evacuated its employees.

It later became known that the attack on the Orsk oil refinery was an operation by the SBU.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga announced more unpleasant surprises for the Russians: according to him, Ukrainian weapons will now reach any military facilities .
