Defense Minister Hegseth in leaked document: ‘US will not help Europe with Russian attack’

The United States is unlikely to help Europe in the event of a Russian attack, according to a leaked Pentagon document.

Secret guidelines from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledge that the Trump administration will provide little or no support to Europe.

The document, “Interim National Defense Strategic Guidance” — obtained by The Washington Post — states that the US could support Europe only with troops that are not needed for domestic defense or to deter China.

The admission fits with recent calls by Hegseth and other administration officials for European allies to invest more in their own defense.

The document also emphasizes the importance of refocusing military efforts on China amid fears of a potential conflict in the Pacific over Taiwan.

Unlike his predecessor Joe Biden, Trump said last year that he would not defend Taiwan from a Chinese invasion. The document, which

The Post says contains “fingerprints” from the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation, supports recent comments that the US would pressure allies around the world to invest more in defense spending.

That’s why allies are being encouraged to take the lead in deterring aggression from Russia, North Korea and Iran. The Heritage Foundation is behind the so-called Project 2025, a manifesto for a more conservative US.

Trump repeatedly said during his campaign that he had nothing to do with Project 2025, but

The Post sees strong similarities between the manifesto and the policies of the Republican leader.
