The United States has offered European countries the opportunity to unfreeze some of Russia’s sovereign assets frozen after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, according to the Financial Times and Reuters .

The plan was presented by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump. The unfrozen assets are proposed to be transferred to the management of a Washington-controlled entity.

According to the publication’s sources, this initiative is supposedly intended to help resume peace negotiations.

At the same time, according to the FT, European representatives rejected this plan.

Easing sanctions against Russia

As a reminder, the Trump administration is considering easing sanctions on “shadow fleet” vessels that transport oil and petroleum products from Russia, Iran, and Venezuela.

According to Reuters, the goal of this move is to reduce record-high global freight rates. Discussions on this issue reportedly began almost immediately after Trump lifted sanctions on Russian diesel fuel . According to a US government official, the new discussions are focused on the possibility of allowing the transportation of “legal oil” on vessels previously subject to sanctions.
