UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Russian citizen Gleb Desyatnikov as his Assistant for Mine Action and Police in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPO), the organization’s press service reported .

The department said that the Russian has 35 years of experience in international relations, political issues, and security problems, which he allegedly gained while working in government structures, in the field of multilateral diplomacy, and “in conflict-affected regions.”

It is also known that since 2018, Desyatnikov has been the Russian Ambassador to Jordan, and before that, he worked for eight years as Deputy Director of the Department of the Middle East and North Africa of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The UN press service added that the Russian was also a senior adviser on the Middle East and North Africa at the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, head of the department for Iraq and Jordan at the Foreign Ministry. In addition, he worked at the Russian embassy in Jordan. Also, from 1994 to 1997, Desyatnikov was on several trips to the UN Special Commission on Iraq.

“Desyatnikov has a master’s degree in international relations, which he received from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). In addition to his native Russian, Desyatnikov is fluent in English and Arabic,” the report noted.
