A corruption scandal in the Ukrainian energy sector has caused a major stir. NABU and SAPO continue to search the homes of members of the criminal organization.

According to the Financial Times , sports bags filled with cash were discovered in officials’ luxurious Kyiv apartments, and a gold toilet was even spotted in one. Law enforcement also found audio recordings of officials discussing money laundering strategies.

Member of Parliament Yaroslav Zheleznyak wrote on his Telegram channel  that a golden toilet was located in the apartment of businessman Timur Mindich. He said he didn’t believe it at first.

The publication recalled that NABU and SAPO released extensive detailed evidence of corruption this week, including recordings of conversations revealing that high-ranking officials received kickbacks for construction projects to protect energy facilities from Russian attacks. Shortly thereafter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy demanded the resignation of Justice Minister Herman Galushchenko and Energy Minister Svitlana Grinchuk, who were subsequently removed from their positions.

Additionally, sanctions were imposed against Mindich, one of the defendants in the case. According to investigators, he was a co-organizer of the alleged scheme, and it was through his “back office” that approximately $100 million in illicit funds passed.

The publication added that NABU detective unit head Oleksandr Abakumov had previously stated that Mindich was warned of the investigation several hours before it began, giving the businessman the opportunity to flee Ukraine.Read also:

“Back in July, we were talking about a general sense of injustice… it was still quite abstract. Now, we’re talking about very specific offenses, very specific names, very specific amounts of money,” said Anastasia Radina, chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Anti-Corruption Policy.

Poland has stated that corruption scandals will complicate support for Ukraine.

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded to the high-profile corruption scandal in the Ukrainian energy sector . He noted that early in Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presidency, he warned him that Russia would inevitably exploit any corruption scandals in Ukraine for propaganda attacks.

Tusk emphasized that Moscow and pro-Russian forces in Europe have been promoting the narrative of a supposedly “corrupt Ukraine” for years, using it to undermine international trust. He added that this continues to create a false perception in Europe about the level of corruption in Ukraine.
