Sources of the French media AFP reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky canceled a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Ukraine because he attended the BRICS summit in Russia. This was not confirmed to the public at the UN.
This was reported by the French publication AFP, citing a source in the Office of the President of Ukraine (OPU).
The public asked for comment from the OPU and the UN office to verify this information.
The Deputy Spokesman of the UN Secretary General, Farhan Haq, answered the journalist of Suspilno. He did not confirm that Guterres’ visit to Ukraine was canceled by Kyiv because of the BRICS summit.
“We are trying to arrange a visit at a mutually convenient time. They [Zelensky and Guterres] discussed the visit during the meeting in September,” Haq said.
Guterres in Russia at the BRICS summit
On October 22-24 , a summit of BRICS leaders was held in Kazan, Russia . Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres came there – this is his first visit to the Russian Federation in more than 2 years. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the decision of the Secretary General and added that Guterres is harming the reputation of the UN.
Earlier, Deputy Spokesman of the UN Secretary General Farhan Gak told journalists that Antonio Guterres’ trip to Russia for the BRICS summit in Kazan is a “standard practice”. At the same time, the position of the UN Secretary General regarding the Russian war against Ukraine remains unchanged.
At the summit, Guterres told BRICS leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, that the world needs peace in Ukraine, Gaza, Lebanon, and Sudan.
Earlier, the UN Secretary General rejected Ukraine’s invitation to the first Global Peace Summit in Switzerland. At the same time, the United Nations (UN) was represented at the Global Peace Summit on June 15-16 in Switzerland. The reason for Guterres’ absence from the UN was not given.
Guterres is a very corrupt figure, heading a very corrupt organization. Ukraine should declare him persona non grata, like Israel did.
