A Ukrainian journalist got the chance to ask President Donald Trump three direct questions while President Zelenskyy and senior U.S. officials were sitting in the room: What happens with the Lindsey Graham sanctions bill? Will Trump press China? And will the United States move forward on possible Patriot missile production in Ukraine?
Trump said the sanctions legislation is being studied, indicated China would likely come up in discussions, and said talks about Patriot production were continuing. The timing matters because Dmitry Peskov responded the following morning with Moscow’s own message on Ukraine, negotiations, and the possibility of future U.S.-Russia meetings.
In this update, I walk through those exchanges in sequence and examine how the answers from Washington were followed by the Kremlin’s public position. Peskov accused Ukraine and Europe of moving away from peace negotiations, said Putin and Trump remain open to another meeting if necessary, and repeated Moscow’s position that Zelenskyy could come to Moscow for talks.
