An insurgent movement in Russia carried out attacks on railroad tank cars, destroying over 10,000 metric tons of oil.
The rebels carried out Operation Barrel with the support of the Freedom of Russia Legion.
Following precision strikes on oil refineries and ports, the Kremlin attempted to hide the crude oil by shifting the responsibility for its storage and logistics to the Russian railway network.
The aim of the strategy was simple: by distributing reserves across the country in tank cars, ensure the oil’s preservation until it could be exported at the highest possible price per barrel.
The insurgents infiltrated the relevant agencies to obtain the necessary information.
They then conducted on-site reconnaissance, intercepted train schedules, and analyzed vulnerabilities and escape routes.
As a result of explosions and arson, over 10,000 metric tons of crude oil were destroyed.
Operations at a number of key rail junctions were also halted—a multi-day “traffic jam” on the tracks blocked supplies and paralyzed key logistics corridors.

“Over the past six months, we have destroyed dozens of locomotives and hundreds of other railway infrastructure facilities,” noted a member of the insurgent movement.
Without these locomotives and rail junctions, the regime has faced difficulties delivering fuel across the country.
“Destroying locomotives is just part of our systematic work,” added a member of the insurgent movement.
The enemy is forced to keep large quantities of petroleum products on the railroad tracks because it cannot ship them to refineries. This, in turn, creates an even greater logistical bottleneck along this route.

Faced with a shortage of locomotives and threats on the roads, the regime began using tank cars en masse as mobile storage units, periodically moving them between stations within the region.
“Operation Barrel has dealt a blow to Putin and the oligarchs that will have catastrophic consequences over time. As a result of the tanker explosions, the regime has lost over 10,000 metric tons of oil. Together with the cost of the tankers, that amounts to over $10 million,” said a member of the insurgent movement.

In addition to the direct damage to the war economy, the attack forced the Kremlin to spend additional resources on guarding such facilities.
In June, the insurgent movement in Russia helped Ukraine strike factories near Orenburg.
