The US President emphasized that Trump decided not to impose tariffs against Russia due to negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump has decided not to impose new tariffs on Russia as negotiations with the country continue to end the war in Ukraine, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Gassett said in an interview with  ABC News .

“Obviously, negotiations with Russia and Ukraine are ongoing, and I think the president has made a decision not to mix these two issues,” the official stressed.

At the same time, Gassett emphasized that this does not mean that in the future Russia will be treated “completely differently than any other country.”

“Would you literally advise going and putting a whole bunch of new things on the table in the middle of negotiations that affect the lives of many Americans, Ukrainians and Russians? You wouldn’t do that. […] You shouldn’t throw something new into these negotiations right in the middle of them. It’s just unfair,” he noted.

The channel host also asked whether the official understood that the Russian Federation would not pay new tariffs, compared to many US allies such as Europe, Canada, and Mexico, to which he replied:

“Russia is in the midst of peace talks that really affect thousands and thousands of lives. And that’s what President Trump is focused on right now.”

At the same time, the US imposed a 10% tariff on Ukraine, which is also involved in negotiations to end the war.

Putin previously responded to Trump’s tariffs . According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russia has not been subject to Trump’s restrictions, as it currently has no trade relations with the United States. 

The New York Times, in turn, explained why Trump spared Russia from new tariffs . According to experts, this is a political decision, as the US president does not want escalation while his negotiations with Putin are ongoing.
