The US will be able to identify the Russian units that committed the atrocities in Bucha .

Identifying those involved “is now an extremely high priority” for US intelligence agencies, the official said.

Intelligence streams have been collected and analyzed using all available tools and assets since the atrocities became known, and the US has been narrowing down the suspects.

There is no certainty that the US will announce its findings publicly, the official said, and a decision could be made to leave it up to Ukraine. The US is also looking into possible indications that more than one unit or group of Russian fighters was present in Bucha at the time of the atrocities. The US is trying to determine if the atrocities occurred when one Russian unit retreated while another entered, the official added.

Russian atrocities in Bucha

After the liberation of Bucha, numerous photos and videos began to appear in the Kiev region, demonstrating the atrocities of the Russian invaders. In particular, the footage shows the bodies of dead civilians lying on the streets of Bucha. Some have their hands tied and gunshot wounds to the head. 

The Russian Ministry of Defense denied any involvement in the brutal killings and torture of the inhabitants of Bucha. The Russian Federation also demanded to convene an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on “provocations of Ukrainian radicals” in Bucha on April 4, but was refused.
