The Pentagon stressed that “multiple nuclear adversaries challenge the security of the United States, its allies and partners.”

The US has decided to adjust its nuclear deterrence strategy amid “escalating nuclear adversaries.”

The Pentagon stressed that “numerous nuclear adversaries challenge the security of the United States, its allies and partners,” so an “adjustment” to nuclear strategy was needed, Voice of America reports .

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Weapons of Mass Destruction Policy Richard Johnson explained that this is being done for the purpose of nuclear deterrence “in light of the increasing nuclear capabilities of China and Russia and the absence of nuclear arms control agreements.”

He specified that the Ministry of Defense, in partnership with the National Nuclear Safety Directorate, has already taken measures to strengthen nuclear deterrence and flexibility, as well as to reduce risks.

“To be ready for the 2030s, we need to modernize our nuclear forces, command and control, and infrastructure so we can be flexible and adapt to new challenges, threats, or changes,” said Grant Schneider, deputy director for strategic stability on the Joint Staff.
