In my posts I put different aspects of supporting Ukraine that seem obvious:

1)    Moral. Itโ€™s so simple. Russia attacked Ukraine for no reason, occupied territories, and committed the ghastliest crimes you may imagine. You either let it happen and acknowledge it is normal, or you fight it. There is no third option. This is the question of your moral values, of empathy. The thing with morals is that if you normalize something, there is no going back. If itโ€™s no longer wrong to annex neighbors, execute civilians, rape children, and then say โ€œletโ€™s discuss peaceโ€, then everyone will be doing it too. Itโ€™s Pandora box.

2)    Economy. Ukraine can feed half a billion people with its agriculture, have huge deposits of various resources, and 30-40 million people with a very good level of education in average. It even produces rockets to carry satellites into space. Itโ€™s not โ€œa small country somewhereโ€ as some may think. Itโ€™s the largest country in Europe with huge potential. Yes, GDP is not impressive yet, but itโ€™s the question of proper development and management. The question is who gets it, Russia or EU.

3)    Status and leadership. The world order is built on the fact that the West (mainly USA) ensure the stability. If everyone understands that the world policeman has become too tired or weak, everyone will start doing what they want as long as they have brute force for that. UN has become a useless platform already because if it cannot act. So if you want to be taken seriously, you have to act, not talk. Not doing so will lead to the inevitable decline. And there are documents that you signed, like Budapest memorandum. Trust is hard to earn and easy to lose, and when it’s lost, no one deals with you.

4)    Safety. It comes from all above. Russia wonโ€™t stop. If it gets Ukrainian resources and people, first it will โ€œcleanseโ€ it with the genocide of millions, and then the survivors will be enlisted into the Russian army and go further. And then youโ€™ll either have to fight them or โ€œdiscussโ€ if Poland or the Baltics should be supported. Youโ€™ll have to pay in blood, not in money. Or just let the Russian Bear do whatever it wants.

And for those who say โ€œour problems firstโ€. I understand this position, but it gets absurd when you analyze the scale and the bets. If you take all Western-aligned world, itโ€™s 12 USD per person monthly, like a Netflix subscription. In US, the real amount of money that goes outside is 3 USD monthly per person (and 12 USD goes to weapons factories thus subsidizing its own economy). What kind of your own problems you may solve with that? Is it worth millions of deaths in genocide, and then wars across the globe involving your own children a generation later? And the economy will surely go down after that.

Russia is a weak country. It’s economy is smaller than Texas. They produce nothing. So why is it not ended quickly? Just block their economy and give Ukraine proper tools. So why is this being done so slowly?

Another post from Volodymyr:

War is unreasonable in 21st century. It simply does not pay off. Itโ€™s not like in pre-industrial times when you could take your knights, have a fight with some neighbor, grab his land, tax his peasants, and profit from it. No, nowadays you have lots of extra expenses: rebuild the cities, infrastructure, and economy, spend money on education, culture, medicate, pay the retired people, and of course hold the army and police to keep people from revolting. It simply makes no sense economically. Itโ€™s much more profitable to trade and invest.

But why is Russia doing it then? Losing half a million of productive age males in war and another million as emigrants, burning hundreds of billions on weaponry, getting 300 billion of foreign assets closed, having Gasprom going bankrupt, getting whole industries destroyed, hyper-inflation looming. Whatโ€™s the point? They would be much better of if they did not start.

They have different way of thinking. It just does not fall within your logic. They want world dominance, and money is just a tool they use. They donโ€™t care to bring the world into ruin as long as it will be their world in the end. They do not build, as they have a huge country for that. They pillage, destroy, and enslave. Itโ€™s about power, not about money and well-being. No matter how low you are as long as others are below you. Basic hierarchical instinct. That is their way of thinking.
