Ukrainians Will Bomb Them: Experts Predict Crushing Defeat for DPRK Army

North Korean troops in Ukraine will suffer a crushing defeat, and the harsh realities of war and the isolation of North Korean troops from Russian soldiers will have a profound impact on the worldview of DPRK soldiers, former coordinator of the UN Panel of Experts on North Korea Hugh Griffiths told France24 .

He explained that although the DPRK has one of the largest armies in the world, its quality leaves much to be desired, it relies on mass, and North Korean soldiers have not been tested on the battlefield. Therefore, most likely, in the war in Ukraine, Kim Jong-un’s propaganda about the “invincibility” of North Korea will burst like a soap bubble, which will affect their morale.

“The Ukrainians are going to bomb them, and you will see the defeat of North Korea… They will die, they will not make any progress, they will not reach Kyiv on Russian tanks. Nothing good will happen to them,” the expert noted.

Moreover, according to Griffiths, Russia will most likely send North Korean troops into the “meat grinder” of the war and will not particularly care about their survival in terms of meeting basic needs such as food and water.

“They will not be treated well, they will be used as cannon fodder,” he said.

This, he says, will cause fear and likely lead to mass defections. This is one of Kim Jong-un’s worst nightmares, because it calls into question the entire legitimacy of his regime.

At the same time, Edward Howell, a fellow at the Korea Foundation at Chatham House, believes that Kim Jong-un likely took these threats into account before agreeing to support the Russian military with his troops. Given the money, food, military aid and satellite technology that North Korea receives from Russia in exchange, the benefits are too great for North Korea to consider sending its troops to Russia a mistake.

At the same time, Griffiths noted that Kim Jong-un could pay a more than high price for these risks.

“I think this is a miscalculation. Nothing good will come of this. Neither for Kim nor for Putin,” he said.
