Former Minister of Defence of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov stated that a domestically produced ballistic missile successfully hit a target during testing.

This information came to light in an interview with Sternenko and the former Ukrainian defense minister.

On July 14, Mykhailo Fedorov announced that Ukraine had conducted tests of a domestically produced ballistic missile of an unnamed type.

“We successfully tested the ballistic missile and hit the target without veering off course,” Mykhailo Fedorov said.

Fedorov stated that the testing is not yet complete.

This likely refers to the 1KR1 Sapsan (Hrim-2) SRBM, which entered serial production in 2025.

The development of the SRBM was first announced in 2007, when the Pivdenne Design Office received the technical specifications and the first $12 million for the project, which was named Sapsan.

In 2018, it was reported that a mock-up of the launch system, a demonstrator of the cluster warhead, and an engineering mock-up of the missile itself had been tested.

It is known that as of early 2022, development was underway for two types of missiles: one with a diameter of 900 mm and a range of 500 km for domestic use, and another with a diameter of 600 mm and a range of 280 km intended for export. The warhead for both variants was planned to weigh 500 kg.

In February 2022, before the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine allocated several hundred million hryvnias to the missile industry. In particular, funding was earmarked for the development of a domestically produced SRBM.

Updates of the development of a Ukrainian ballistic missile first emerged in 2023, when the then-Minister of Defence of Ukraine, Oleksii Reznikov, announced it.

During the “Ukraine 2024. Independence” forum, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about the testing of the first domestically produced ballistic missile.
