Ukrainian forces launched a combined attack using naval and aerial drones against the coastal promenade of Yalta in temporarily occupied Crimea, sparking heavy fire near a reported gathering of senior Russian military officers, The Moscow Times reported on August 7.
The coastal strike prompted widespread emergency measures across the occupied resort town. Russian occupation authorities and emergency services evacuated local beaches due to incoming sea drones, as visual reports confirmed thick black smoke rising over the promenade following the assault.
Residents published footage showing a major blaze along the city’s embankment following reports of intense gunfire and low-flying uncrewed aerial vehicles.
Citing Crimean Wind OSINT channel, The Moscow Times reported that the fire occurred adjacent to the “Hungry Bird” restaurant, where high-ranking Russian military personnel were reportedly scheduled to assemble.
Local accounts noted that several dark, tinted vehicles—including cars bearing military license plates—left the immediate vicinity shortly before the explosion occurred.
Russian occupation authorities responded by ordering residents and tourists to clear beaches, public parks, and coastal balconies along the Yalta waterfront.
Oleg Kryuchkov, an adviser to the Russian-appointed head of Crimea, confirmed that at least one uncrewed surface vehicle failed to detonate in the bay, prompting emergency services to launch a bomb disposal operation, according to The Moscow Times.
Russian military bloggers, including the pro-war channel Archangel Spetsnaza, noted that the disabled sea drone visually matched Ukrainian “Magura” V6 or V7 models modified to carry FPV aerial drones.
The Moscow Times wrote that the strike signifies an increasing deployment of dual-capability naval drones designed to project airpower directly onto guarded coastal targets across the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula.
This incident coincides with growing reports of deaths under unclear circumstances among senior Russian military figures. Two senior generals—including Lt. Gen. Igor Yerusalimov—recently died under unclear circumstances around the time of a deadly August 1 blast at a Moscow venue, with authorities enforcing extraordinary secrecy surrounding their burials.
