Ukraine’s Defense Forces strikes on Russian logistics in temporarily occupied Crimea are part of a multistage operation that has been underway for years, Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said June 28.
Fuel shortages and lines at gas stations on the occupied peninsula are not the Defense Forces’ ultimate objective, Pletenchuk said during the United News telethon.
“What we are seeing is another stage of a multistage operation. Some may see an emotional response — cutting something off here and now — but that is not the case,” Pletenchuk said.
“A whole range of measures preceded this, and it has taken not months, but years,” he added.
The operation can be traced back to the destruction of Russia’s naval logistics, Pletenchuk said.
“First, naval logistics were cut off — large landing ships. Then came the turn of large railway ferries, which were the foundation of Crimea’s maritime logistics,” he said.
“Then came ordinary ferries, which can also be used for this purpose. At the same time, air defense systems were being destroyed,” Pletenchuk added.
That process also took months, he said.
Ukrainian forces were simultaneously targeting sites along the so-called land corridor connecting Russia with occupied Crimea.
“Everything ultimately comes down to the so-called Crimean Bridge,” Pletenchuk said.
The Navy spokesperson said the operation was progressing “quite successfully.”

Crimea’s fuel crisis intensified in June amid systematic Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure and logistics facilities, according to Ukrainian reports.
Long traffic jams have been reported at the exit from Crimea. Russian-installed authorities have announced the closure of children’s camps, while the tourist season has been effectively disrupted.
Krymenergo, the Russian-controlled energy provider in Crimea, announced “temporary power supply interruptions” on the peninsula June 25.
Drones have attacked Crimea almost every night, with explosions reported in various cities. Ukrainian forces have reported strikes on Russian military sites, power substations and oil terminals.
Ukraine’s Defense Forces have also targeted bridges and crossings connecting Crimea with temporarily occupied territories in southern Ukraine.
Russian-installed authorities declared a state of emergency in Crimea on June 26.
