In March 2024, the Ukrainian Defense Forces destroyed 976 Russian artillery systems, the highest number since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

This year alone – the past three months – the AFU has clobbered 2600 pieces of artillery. That’s more than the biggest majority of countries have in their entire arsenal. Destroying the roach artillery is perhaps even more important than destroying their tanks. Surely, they must be running quite low on this weapon system. They’ve been using a lot of decades-old D-20s and D-30s already.
There have been some analysisses of the Russian tank manufacturing capacity, and guesstimates based on that, but hardly anything about artillery production. However, common sense says that Russia certainly can’t replace 1000 destroyed guns in a month. Even the huge arsenal of mothballed Soviet equipment will eventually run empty. So, I expect an increasing artillery shortage for the Russian army this year. That outlook is positive for the brave defenders.
