On August 28, 2025, Ukraine made military history, again. A first-person-view drone, the kind you can build in a garage, just hit a Russian Buyan-M corvette over 350 kilometers away. That’s right, a hobbyist-style FPV drone tagged a Kalibr-missile–armed warship, and the entire world took notice.
I’m Wes O’Donnell, and in this video, I break down how Ukraine pulled off what no military has ever done: a record-breaking long-range drone strike that exposed just how fragile russia’s “modern” navy really is.
The Buyan-M, part of Russia’s supposedly formidable Black Sea fleet, lost its radar and defense systems in seconds. Its AK-630 guns never fired. Its crew never even saw what hit them. When your sensors die, your ship dies, and this strike turned one of russia’s missile ships into an expensive raft with delusions of grandeur.
We’ll talk about:
- How Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR) used advanced navigation and coordination to pull off the hit.
- Why the Buyan-M class is now a floating embarrassment.
- What this means for russia’s naval future, and NATO’s understanding of modern sea warfare.
- How Ukraine’s $200 drones are rewriting the rules of warfare faster than any defense think tank can keep up.
From the Moskva to the Ivanovets, and now the Buyan-M, this is a pattern, and it’s one that should terrify every admiral still clinging to the idea of invincible fleets.
When torpedoes sank battleships, naval warfare changed forever. When aircraft carriers arrived, it changed again. Now, a drone piloted by a 20-year-old with Xbox reflexes has done it once more.
This isn’t just a Ukrainian victory; it’s a turning point in the history of naval combat.Subscribe for more unfiltered breakdowns of how Ukraine is redefining the future of warfare. Glory to Ukraine!
