The strike could weaken Russia’s ability to launch missile attacks on Ukraine.
Overnight on August 16, Ukraine’s Navy struck the launch positions and deployment site of a Russian Bastion system in occupied Crimea, according to Ukraine’s General Staff and the Ukrainian Navy.
According to the General Staff, the nighttime attack hit an area where an enemy missile unit was concentrated in Rezervne, in temporarily occupied Crimea.
Ukraine’s Navy clarified that the target was the positions of a Russian Bastion coastal missile system.
“The strike inflicted significant losses in weapons and personnel on the enemy. The final losses are still being clarified,” the Navy said.
The agency emphasized that the Bastion is a scarce and expensive weapon system. Russian forces use it to launch strikes against southern and other regions of Ukraine.
In particular, Bastion systems are used to launch Oniks supersonic missiles and Zircon hypersonic missiles.
What other targets were hit
In addition to the Bastion system, Ukrainian forces struck a railway bridge near Svitlodolynske in the Zaporizhzhia region.
Russian forces use the bridge for military logistics and personnel movements.
A Russian military logistics and ammunition depot in Karlivka, Donetsk region, was also targeted.
On August 12, Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck Russian military facilities in temporarily occupied Crimea.
In particular, near Novofedorivka, they hit the control tower at Saki airfield, where a center for collecting and processing data from Orion and Forpost reconnaissance drones was operating.
