Ukraine has conducted at least three tests of exoatmospheric systems -complexes capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in near space, according to The Guardian.

Russia’s rapid deployment program for the Rassvet satellite network is not the only space-related threat Ukraine has to contend with.

Moscow has also deployed Oreshnik ballistic missiles at least three times. Crucially, these missiles are capable of reaching near space before separating into multiple independently targetable warheads.

Against the backdrop of these threats, Kyiv has accelerated efforts to diversify its access to space technologies and communication systems, gradually reducing its reliance on American systems, particularly Starlink. The operation of the latter has been accompanied by controversial restrictions in recent weeks. At the same time, Ukraine is developing its own space-based countermeasures against such threats, including the Oreshnik missiles.

Ukraine has already conducted at least three tests of systems designed to intercept targets in near space.

“It is a priority… We’ve already demonstrated launches of exo-atmospheric systems and we are working to see if we can get that in production,” stated Fedir Venislavskyi, head of the Subcommittee on State Security, Defense, and Defense Innovations.

However, he acknowledged that, given the severe challenges of the war, funding will be a significant hurdle.

It is also known that, in parallel, Ukraine is working on establishing its own satellite constellation, joining a growing number of states seeking to enhance their presence in outer space.

A practical step in this direction was the launch of the Obria Nano satellite. Ukraine and the Danish company GomSpace announced its successful deployment into orbit. It is the first test unit within a project to create an independent Ukrainian communication network, which reportedly could eventually consist of around 245 satellites.

Incidentally, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently stated that the Ukrainian FP-9 ballistic missile, capable of reaching Moscow, will be ready by autumn 2026.

Fire Point is accelerating work on an air defense system, with the anti-ballistic capability expected to be ready this year.
