Ukrainian drones operated by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) struck several high-value Russian air defense and radar systems in a single overnight operation, with the targeted equipment worth more than $170 million at reported export prices, according to Volodymyr Yatsenko, one of the founders of Ukrainian digital bank monobank, on August 13.
The reported targets included two Pantsir-S2 air defense systems, a Kasta-2E2 radar, a Sopka-2 radar complex, and—most critically—a 92N6 engagement radar belonging to Russia’s S-400 Triumf air defense system.
“Thank you to the SBU pilots, the operators of our DOVBUSH—good hunting tonight!” Yatsenko wrote.
According to his assessment, the two Pantsir-S2 systems are valued at up to $19 million each, while the Kasta-2E2 radar costs at least $60 million. The Sopka-2 was estimated at roughly $15 million, and the S-400’s 92N6 radar at as much as $60 million.
Combined, the equipment represents more than $170 million in export-market value.
The damage could be considerably more important than the price tag suggests, however, because the systems perform different roles within Russia’s layered air defense network.
The 92N6 is a key engagement radar for the S-400, responsible for tracking targets and providing guidance data needed to engage them. Without that radar, an S-400 unit can lose its ability to effectively employ its missile launchers until the missing capability is restored or replaced.
In other words, destroying the radar can degrade an entire S-400 position without necessarily having to destroy every launcher individually.
The Kasta-2E2 and Sopka-2, meanwhile, serve as important parts of Russia’s radar coverage, including the detection and tracking of targets flying at relatively low altitudes.
The Pantsir-S2 systems provide the close-range defensive layer around such high-value positions, protecting larger air defense complexes and radar sites against drones, aircraft, and incoming precision weapons.
Taken together, the reported strikes therefore hit multiple layers of the same defensive architecture at once: detection, engagement guidance, and close-in protection.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Armed Forces struck several Russian military targets in temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories and Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions, including a Buk-M3 air defense system, supply depots, a command-and-observation post, and six UAV control points.
