Naftogaz Group has concluded the first agreement for the purchase of Azerbaijani gas with a company of the SOCAR group – SOCAR Energy Ukraine.
The first test gas supply is being carried out via the Trans-Balkan Corridor along the Bulgaria – Romania – Ukrainian border route, the press service of Naftogaz of Ukraine reports.

“This is a small but strategically important step that paves the way for long-term cooperation. It is also another example of diversifying supply sources and strengthening Ukraine’s energy security,” said Serhiy Koretsky, Chairman of the Board of the company.
As reported, last year there was discussion about the possibility of transiting supposedly Azerbaijani gas through Ukraine to Europe instead of Russian gas. However, Russia was supposed to be involved in the Azerbaijani gas scheme one way or another, as Azerbaijan does not have such free gas volumes, and it also needs to gain access to the Russian gas transmission system.
As a result, from January 1, 2025, Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas after the transit agreement with Gazprom expired.
Due to the projected decline in revenues of the “GTS Operator” without the transit of Russian gas, the National Energy and Natural Gas Regulatory Commission (NEERCP) increased tariffs for the transportation of natural gas through main gas pipelines by 2-4 times.
