On the night of August 8, 2026, the city of Syzran in the Samara region was
attacked by drones. The main target of the strike was an oil refinery.
After the strikes, a large-scale fire broke out on the territory of the enterprise. This is reported by monitoring Telegram channels.
Attack results
A UAV threat regime was declared in the Samara region at around 3:00 a.m. local time. However, shortly after midnight, residents of Syzran reported a series of explosions near an industrial zone.
According to monitoring channels and eyewitness accounts published online, a fire broke out on the territory of the Syzran Refinery after the strikes. Footage from the scene shows a large fire at the plant’s industrial site.
NASA’s FIRMS web mapping platform, which shows active fires and thermal anomalies around the world in near real time, also confirms the attack on the refinery. As of the morning of August 8, satellites had recorded multiple fire outbreaks on the territory of the enterprise.
Due to the threat of UAV use, Rosaviatsia temporarily implemented the “Carpet” plan for the reception and departure of aircraft at Kurumoch International Airport. As of the morning of August 8, at least 11 international and domestic flights were delayed in departure and arrival.
What is known about the company?
Syzran Oil Refinery is one of the key enterprises of the Samara Refinery Group, which is part of PJSC Rosneft.
The designed refining capacity is up to 8.9 million tons of oil per year (about 3% of the total volume of oil refining in the Russian Federation). The main products are: motor gasoline (AI-92, AI-95), diesel fuel, aviation kerosene (TS-1), marine fuel, liquefied hydrocarbon gases, fuel oil and bitumen.
The plant has direct access to the Volga region railways, the pipeline system of Transneft, as well as the possibility of shipping fuel by river transport across the Volga to the Volga-Vyatka region, the Center and the Caspian basin.
Impact on the military-industrial complex and the Russian army
The Syzran Refinery plays a strategic role in ensuring the military logistics of the Russian Federation. The geographical location of the plant allows for the prompt supply of diesel fuel and gasoline to the units of the Central and Southern Military Districts. It is the Southern Military District that is the main logistical hub for supplying the occupation group of troops on the territory of Ukraine.
The plant produces aviation kerosene of the TS-1 brand, which is supplied to military airfields in the Volga region, central and southern Russia. This fuel is used to refuel combat aircraft (fighters, bombers and attack aircraft) that carry out missile and bomb strikes.
Fuel from the Syzran Refinery provides logistics chains for defense enterprises of the Volga Military-Industrial Complex (production of armored vehicles, ammunition, and missile systems).
As a reminder, on August 7, a local warehouse of the Wildberries marketplace was attacked in Yekaterinburg. As a result of the hits, a fire broke out and smoke rose at the facility, and the personnel were evacuated.
As OBOZ.UA reported, on the night of August 6, 2026, Yaroslavl, Russia, was subjected to a massive attack by Ukrainian drones. According to eyewitnesses and monitoring channels, the main target of the strike was a local oil refinery, and after the attack, a huge column of black smoke rose above the refinery.
