Ukraine wants to use Starlink to hit Russian ballistic missile launchers more precisely. To this end, former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov tried to reach an agreement with American billionaire Elon Musk through secret channels several times.

Musk’s refusal and call for a “deal”

“There is no positive decision at the moment,” said one of the publication’s interlocutors.

According to him, Musk continues to argue with Fedorov, believing that using Starlink for such purposes could lead to further escalation of the war.

“Elon keeps saying it’s time to make a deal,” said an associate of the former minister.

Zelensky’s appeal to Trump

According to sources, during a meeting with US leader Donald Trump, President Volodymyr Zelensky asked him to contact Musk with a request to allow the use of the Starlink satellite system.

As the publication notes, Trump did not give a clear answer to this request.

Successful experience of past cooperation

The Atlantic recalls that last winter, Russian forces guided their drones for strikes in Ukraine using Starlink. This technology allowed the Russians to bypass Ukrainian air defense systems and strike any target.

This prompted Fedorov to make an urgent appeal to Musk for help. Musk called Fedorov in late January while he was celebrating his daughter’s birthday. It is reported that this conversation led to the development of a plan to block Russian access to the Starlink terminals.

The publication adds that Fedorov continues to convince Musk about the possibility of using Starlink to hit military targets on Russian territory, but so far without success.
