U.S. President Donald Trump criticized calls to impose additional sanctions against russia, stating that such restrictions are inappropriate amid negotiations for the release of American citizens.
Trump himself told reporters this, according to the White House.
The U.S. President called those advocating for additional restrictions against russia “stupid” and suggested that Moscow is merely laughing at such initiatives.
He also questioned the wisdom of imposing sanctions while negotiations are underway for the release of U.S. citizens held captive in russia.
As an example, Trump cited the case of 74-year-old American Steven Hubard, who was captured by russian forces in Ukraine in April 2022. The man, a former teacher from Michigan, was later convicted by a russian court of allegedly serving as a mercenary on the side of Ukraine. The U.S. deemed his detention unlawful.
Hubard was released on October 21 during a visit to St. Petersburg by Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
Meanwhile, as Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump released exclusive footage from the temporarily occupied town of Oleshky in the Kherson Region, which was filmed on location by Newsmax journalist Alex Salvi.
