Discussions are underway between representatives of Turkey, European and Ukrainian partners regarding Ukraine’s intention to join NATO.
Turkey has no objections to Ukraine joining NATO , but called for a realistic approach to this issue.

The position of his country was voiced by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in an interview posted on the website of the Turkish Foreign Ministry. “We must be very realistic. We have openly stated that we are in favor of Ukraine’s membership in NATO. This was a statement by the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, so this is the official position,” he said.
Commenting on the current position of the US administration regarding Ukraine’s membership in NATO, which is known to be negative, Fidan noted that the previous one was not in favor either. “I am not sure that the previous administration was in favor of Ukraine’s entry into NATO. Therefore, I think that there is no new policy in this regard,” the Turkish minister expressed his opinion.
Fidan added that discussions on Ukraine’s intention to join NATO are continuing between representatives of Turkey, European and Ukrainian partners. “Ukraine is asking for NATO membership, but not just to be a member. It wants to see a security guarantee,” the diplomat stated.
“At present, the security guarantee is one of the main issues that we are discussing. Thus, the Ukrainians, in particular, want to see NATO membership, if not the creation of a large international coalition for deployment along the contact line, or the Russians may have other ideas about guarantees and security. These are the issues that we are discussing with alternative scenarios,” the minister detailed.
