Although Americans “despise” Putin, they are “tired of the cost and duration” of the war. And the parties are generally divided in their opinions on how peace in Ukraine should be achieved.
The United States wants Ukraine to reach a peace agreement with Russia, including the majority of Republicans, Democrats, independents, and ordinary American voters.
Despite this, the parties are divided over what the process of negotiations to end the fighting should look like, as White House officials meet with Russian officials to discuss ending the war and separately negotiate a natural resources deal with Ukraine, The Hill reports .
A Harvard CAPS-Harris poll found that US President Donald Trump’s call for direct talks with Russia to end the war in Ukraine is wildly popular among Republicans, with 85% in favor. A slim majority of independents support the approach, while 60% of Democrats oppose it.
Nearly 6 in 10 people of all parties said they oppose the Trump administration excluding Ukraine from the talks, including 76% of Democrats and 64% of independents. But 62% of Republicans said they support negotiations without Ukraine.
At the same time, Democrats and independents are not against excluding Europeans from the negotiating process, while Republicans are in favor of their participation.
Three-quarters of Democrats and nearly two-thirds of independents oppose Trump forcing Ukraine to give up its occupied lands to end the war, while two-thirds of Republicans support it. Roughly two-thirds of Republicans, Democrats, and independents say Ukraine should receive security guarantees from the U.S. if it makes concessions to the Kremlin.
