Donald Trump has said he would “probably” give Robert F Kennedy Jr a cabinet role in his administration if the independent candidate were to drop out of the presidential bid and endorse him.
Mr Kennedy is expected to clarify whether he plans to drop out of the race and endorse another candidate at a press conference on Friday.
The event, to be held in Phoenix, Arizona, will address “the present historical moment and his path forward”, his press team said.
Nicole Shanahan, Mr Kennedy’s running mate, said on Tuesday that they were considering quitting the race and teaming up with Trump to stop Kamala Harris winning the White House.
Asked about the comments during his Michigan campaign stop, Trump, 78, said he would “love that endorsement”.
Probed on whether he would consider giving Mr Kennedy a role in his administration should he win in November, Trump told CNN: “I like him a lot. I respect him a lot.
“I probably would, if something like that would happen. He’s a very different kind of a guy — a very smart guy. And, yeah, I would be honoured by that endorsement.”
Trump said he had known Mr Kennedy “a very long time”, adding: “I didn’t know he was thinking about getting out, but if he is thinking about getting out, certainly I’d be open to it.”
The former president also suggested that appointing Mr Kennedy would not provoke backlash from party members, despite some of his progressive positions.
“I like smart people, and Republicans like me,” Trump said.
Trump also revealed he would “certainly” consider giving Elon Musk, who endorsed the Republican candidate hours after he survived an assassination attempt in July, an advisory role or cabinet job.
“He’s a very smart guy. I certainly would, if he would do it,” Trump said.
Speaking on the Impact Theory podcast, Ms Shanahan said the campaign was debating whether to “join forces” with the Republican candidate, or stay in the race to help “establish ourselves” as a viable third party with sights on the 2028 election.
“There’s two options that we’re looking at and one is staying in, forming that new party but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump, or we draw somehow more votes from Trump,” she said.
She added: “Or we walk away right now and join forces with Donald Trump and, you know, we walk away from that and we explain to our base why we’re making this decision.”
After Joe Biden exited the presidential race last month, Mr Kennedy unsuccessfully sought a meeting with Ms Harris to discuss the possibility of backing her campaign in exchange for a plum role in her administration should she win.
Mr Kennedy made similar overtures to Trump last month at a meeting at the Republican national convention in Milwaukee.

Kennedy said Ukraine should be forbidden from joining NATO, and announced that as president he would consider admitting Russia to NATO and deescalating tensions with China. He said the 2014 Ukrainian revolution was an attempted coup sponsored by the U.S. against the Ukrainian government, and that the Ukrainian government committed atrocities against the Russian population in Donbas, wrongly claiming that all casualties of the Donbas War between 2014 and 2022 (about 14,000) were Russians. He said that Russians living there “were being systematically killed by the Ukrainian government”.
