Any peace deal reached between Ukraine and Russia likely won’t be fair, Czech President Petr Pavel said Wednesday — but justice should be the objective nonetheless.
“A just peace, if we were to imagine it on a scale from 100 percent to nothing, would mean the restoration of Ukraine’s full control over its territory, including Crimea. It would require that the aggressor pay compensation for war damages. But that’s probably a fantasy, we can all agree,” Pavel said on PoliTalk, a Czech political podcast.
“In reality, the outcome will be slightly different. [But] our objective should be to get as close as possible to a just peace.”
Ukrainian officials told POLITICO on Monday that they would be open to peace talks, now that Kyiv’s position has been strengthened by its successful incursion into Russia, but wouldn’t agree to negotiate directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

BRUSSELS — The EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell today called for lifting restrictions on Ukraine using donated weapons to hit targets in Russia.
“Ukraine’s Kursk offensive is a severe blow to Russian President Putin’s narrative,” Borrell posted on X. “Lifting restrictions on the use of capabilities vs the Russian military involved in aggression against Ukraine, in accordance with international law, would have several important effects:
— Strengthen Ukrainian self defence by ending Russia’s sanctuary for its attacks and bombardments of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
— Save lives and reduce destruction in Ukraine.
— Help advance peace efforts.”

“If our partners lifted all restrictions on long-range capabilities, Ukraine would not need to physically enter the Kursk region,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this week.
Other allies like Denmark and Sweden have said Ukraine can use donated weapons as it sees fit.

An extremely unwelcome and unhelpful remark from a supposed friend of Ukraine.
He seems to have given up and is now teeing up a horrible “land for peace” deal. His country suffered the horrors of russian occupation for 45 years. Does he want millions of Ukrainians; approximately the same number as the entire population of Czechia, to suffer the same putrid fate?
In terms of the EU, Borrell is the best of a bad lot. But he neglects to mention that only one EU country; France, has supplied long range fires: a small number of SCALPs, but under the same restrictions as those of the US and UK.
Borrell is the guy btw who announced at the start of the full scale invasion, that the EU would purchase several squadrons of Typhoon Eurofighters for Ukraine. But nothing came of it.
This speech exudes capitulation in the face of the most brutal terrorism, a lack of courage and will plunge the world into a deregulated world, devoid of law, handed over to the appetite of the most imperialist States.
Let’s be clear. Nuclear states are a problem today. They dictate the conflict resolutions that suit them whether they are aggressors or not. What will happen when North Korea, Iran have nuclear firepower? Will they dictate their conditions too? When smaller countries, whose nuclear military technology is unattainable, develop their own chemical or bacteriological weapons programs, because they no longer feel safe, abandoned by international institutions, deprived of rights, what will happen?
This is the chaos we are heading towards if we do not do everything to restore justice and Ukraine to its full rights.
What is crazy about the narrative in the West is that some people think that an “acceptable deal” is possible. The Moscow Nazis are very clear and have not changed a single one of their demands. Ukraine is not in a position to dictate a single condition largely because of its allies who are striving to limit the range of action of AFU, to delay arms deliveries or dilute sanctions over long periods.
Only strengthened sanctions that will jeopardize the Russian economy and TOTAL military support over time will allow Ukraine to be in the driver’s seat during negotiations.
Finally, are we going to sell out all aspects of this genocide (war crime…) to satisfy the appearance of a false peace found with Russian psychopaths who will do it again in a decade, knowing that they can massacre everything without consequence? What madness! These people are irresponsible.
How this war is resolved will pave the way for future international law and relations. If justice does not come to a minimum, the war will start again and again everywhere. In worse proportions.
