Trump has expressed interest in traveling to China in his first 100 days in office.

Donald Trump has told advisers that he wants to visit China after taking office, seeking to deepen ties with Xi Jinping , The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. During his first term, Trump visited Beijing nearly a year after taking office.

While Trump aides cautioned that no decision had been made on a return visit, one person familiar with the discussions said Trump had expressed interest in traveling to China in his first 100 days in office.

According to sources, Trump and Xi discussed a personal meeting through their representatives, with one option envisaging the future American president inviting the Chinese leader to the United States.

As the WSJ recalls, Trump has promised to impose tariffs of up to 60% on imports from China, so Beijing is extremely interested in participating in negotiations to prevent or at least slow down the promised tariff increases. A meeting between the two leaders, according to officials, could help kick-start this process.

Trump may also see Xi as a partner in helping end the war in Ukraine, given China’s support for Russia. However, Trump’s social media post about his call with Xi on Friday made no mention of the conflict. “President Xi and I will do everything we can to make the world a more peaceful and secure place!” he wrote.

Trump also discussed a possible trip to India with advisers, according to people close to him.

He is expected to focus initially on domestic issues, including drastic new border enforcement and increased deportations. He will tour the United States in his first week in office, according to people familiar with his plans. Trump plans to visit wildfire-ravaged Los Angeles later this week.

  1. Not sure exactly how much stake the President-elect has in china, but his buddy muskhuilo sure has a ton. Xi was invited to the inauguration, but he declined. As to tariffs I’ve heard proposed anywhere from 10-60%.
