US President Donald Trump said the US should acquire Greenland for international security reasons, citing threats from Russia and China.

Trump made this statement while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office of the White House while signing a series of executive orders on his first day in office, Politico writes . Trump noted that Denmark is not capable of ensuring proper control over the territory.

“Greenland is a wonderful place. We need it for international security. I’m sure Denmark will give in because they don’t have the resources to support that territory,” Trump said.

He added: “Greenland is not only important to us, it is important for international security. Russian boats, Chinese warships – they are everywhere, and Denmark cannot control it.”

Trump has repeatedly stressed the need to acquire Greenland, calling it an “absolute necessity” for the United States, and has not ruled out the possibility of using military force.

These statements caused a wave of indignation in Denmark and Greenland. The leaders of both territories noted that Greenland cannot be the subject of seizure.

Rich in mineral resources, Greenland is of strategic importance for security and trade, especially as world powers look to the Arctic for new opportunities. The island is also home to a U.S. military base.

Although Trump did not mention Greenland in his inaugural address, he has continued to make the issue his focus. The president also noted that his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., visited the island earlier this month, calling the visit part of an effort to build ties.

“The people of Greenland are not happy with Denmark. They seem to be positive about us,” Trump said. “Our representatives, including my son, were there two weeks ago and they seem to like us. We’ll see what happens.”
