The Russian Foreign Minister spoke about the “main mistake” of Western countries and Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump “understands the essence of the conflict in Ukraine” better than other Western leaders, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“When we talk about eliminating the root causes of any conflict, in particular the Ukrainian one, this is the only way to solve the problem and establish lasting peace. We need to eliminate the root causes,” Lavrov noted, Reuters reports .
“Trump was the first and, I think, still practically the only one among Western leaders who repeatedly and with conviction stated that drawing Ukraine into NATO was a huge mistake. And this is one of the root causes that we have repeatedly pointed out,” he added.
Media reports say that Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin has long viewed Ukraine’s desire to move closer to the West, including its desire to join NATO, as a threat to Russia. Lavrov’s comments came after talks in St. Petersburg between Putin and Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
