US President Donald Trump said he was “saving” Ukraine from Russia, and if it weren’t for his help, Ukraine would have been “crushed.” He said this in an interview with The Atlantic .

“I think I’m saving this country. I think this country would be crushed very soon. It’s a big war machine,” Trump said, apparently referring to Russian military power.

He recalled that it was he who authorized the supply of Javelin anti-tank missiles to Ukraine, which became a decisive moment in confronting Russian tanks at the beginning of the invasion. If it were not for these weapons, the war would have been “over in one day,” Trump is sure.

“If it wasn’t for me, I’m the one who gave them the Javelins that knocked out the tanks. You know, that tank moment was a big moment when the tanks got stuck in the mud, and I gave them a huge number of Javelins. These are anti-tank missiles. And they destroyed all those tanks when they got stuck in the mud. That was a big moment because if those tanks had come in, they would have been 71 miles from Kyiv and were going to take Kyiv. That would have been the end of the war; it would have been over in one day,” he said.

At the same time, he noted that he was “sorry that this (war) continued” because many people died as a result, “many more people than are reported.”

He emphasized that he is now “saving” Ukraine with his intervention.

“I can truly say that I am saving this country…. I think I am doing a great service to Ukraine,” Trump said.

At the same time, in response to The Atlantic journalist Jeffrey Goldberg’s remark that Ukrainians do not consider Trump a “savior”, the US president noted that “they don’t believe it because they have pretty good advertising.”
