Trump reproached Europe for “insufficient” aid to Ukraine and was caught in a lie

The numbers given by Trump do not correspond to reality.

During a debate with Kamala Harris, presidential candidate Donald Trump complained that the United States has given Ukraine $250 to $275 billion in aid, while European countries have given only $100 to $150 billion, even though they are closer to Ukraine. However, these claims are false.

According to CNN , according to data from the Kiel Institute of World Economics in Germany, European countries provided much more aid to Ukraine than the United States during and immediately before the beginning of the Russian invasion in early 2022.

The Kiel Institute, which closely monitors aid to Ukraine, found that from the end of January 2022 (just before the Russian invasion in February 2022) to June 2024, the European Union and individual European countries allocated a total of about $207 billion to Ukraine. The US provided approximately $109 billion.

Europe also exceeded the United States in aid that was actually “allocated” to Ukraine — defined by the institute as aid delivered or approved — by about $122 billion from Europe, compared with about $83 billion from the United States.

In addition, Europe has pledged to provide greater total military aid to Ukraine – approximately $88 billion versus $72 billion from the United States. The U.S. barely led in actual military aid allocations, at about $56.91 billion versus Europe’s roughly $56.84 billion. But these are far from the numbers that Trump cited.

It is important to note that different overall metrics can be obtained using different methodologies. The Kiel Institute found that Ukraine received only about half the money in the US 2024 bill, widely described as a $61 billion aid bill for Ukraine. The institute said the rest of the funds mainly go to the Ministry of Defense.
