US President Donald Trump decided to strike a deal with russia regarding diesel fuel after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected six US requests to halt attacks on russian oil refineries. Trump did not consider the attacks on the refineries to be equivalent to the russian strikes on the Ukrainian power grid, which Zelenskyy had demanded be halted.
Axios reported this, citing US and Ukrainian officials.
“Zelenskyy is misjudging the situation. By continuing to strike oil refineries, he is undermining the goodwill he has built with Trump over the past six months,” – said a US official.
After the announcement of the agreement between the US and russia, Zelenskyy stated that the deal came as a surprise to him, calling it “not fair and not honest” and an unwarranted gift to russian dictator vladimir putin.
At the same time, the Ukrainian President informed Trump and his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, that he was prepared to halt attacks on oil refineries if the russians stopped their attacks on Ukrainian power plants.
According to an American official who spoke with the publication, Trump wanted Ukraine to unilaterally cease attacks on russian oil refineries. Trump did not consider the attacks on oil refineries to be equivalent to russian strikes on the Ukrainian power grid, the source added.
It is reported that during eight hours of talks in Miami on Friday, Witkoff and Kushner informed the Ukrainian negotiating delegation that the president is expected to the president would speak with putin and lift sanctions on russian diesel fuel exports.
One Ukrainian official claimed that during the talks, Witkoff and Kushner threatened that Trump might cut off Ukraine’s access to US intelligence if it continued to ignore his requests.
An American official denied that such a threat was made and noted that Witkoff and Kushner told the Ukrainians that the US is a reliable partner that provides ammunition and intelligence. Therefore, Ukraine should not take actions that harm American consumers, Witkoff and Kushner stated.
“The attacks on the refineries cause pain in Russia, but it causes pain for the US, too,” the US official said.
As a reminder, Trump stated that he had reached an agreement with russian dictator vladimir putin whereby russia, the aggressor nation, would supply nearly 5 million metric tons of diesel fuel to the US and global markets.
Meanwhile, negotiations between representatives of Ukraine, the US, and European countries regarding an end to the russian-Ukrainian war concluded early— there will be no second day.
