After meeting with Putin, Trump declared his support for Russian control over Donbass and rejected the idea of a ceasefire.

US President Donald Trump supports Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s proposal that Russia take full control of Donbass (the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions – UNIAN), and that the front lines in other regions be frozen as part of a future agreement with Ukraine, a European diplomat said in a commentary to Fox News.

After meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday, Trump told European allies that the Russian president had reiterated his desire for full control over the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. At the same time, Putin, according to Trump, seemed open to freezing the front lines in the Zaporizhia and Kherson regions.

Before the war, the population of Donbass was about 6.5 million people.

Zelensky rejects surrender of territories

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has previously publicly rejected the idea of handing over territory in Donbas to Russia, saying the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the roughly 30% of Donetsk region that remains under Ukrainian control is unconstitutional and risks further Russian offensives.

Zelensky’s meeting with Trump at the White House is scheduled for Monday.

After talks with Putin, Trump also abandoned his support for the ceasefire, declaring his desire for a long-term peace agreement. Putin, in turn, has repeatedly stated that he is not interested in a temporary truce, but wants a final settlement that will meet the interests of the Kremlin.

On Saturday, Trump wrote on social media:

“Everyone decided that the best way to end the terrible war between Russia and Ukraine is to move directly to a peace agreement that ends the war, not just a ceasefire agreement that often fails to hold.”

European leaders are cautious

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told ZDF television that Trump said Russia “seems ready to negotiate on the basis of the so-called line of contact, rather than administrative boundaries.”

In their joint statement after their conversations with Trump, top European leaders did not specify whether they supported a peace deal instead of a ceasefire, saying only that they “welcome President Trump’s efforts to stop the killing in Ukraine, end Russia’s war of aggression, and achieve a just and lasting peace.”

Putin, for his part, called the talks with Trump in Alaska “very frank.”

“We, of course, respect the position of the American administration, which sees the need for a speedy end to military action… We would like to move to resolving all issues by peaceful means,” he said.

WTF? I thought there will be a ‘swap’? It was said that the invaders will completely retreat from these two regions in exchange for the rest of Donyetsk and Luhansk??? Now the small dictator ‘is open’ to only freezing the front there? He surely got the ass open! 😤

    • Witless didn’t know what the frack he was talking about. The war criminal didn’t change his mind on anything. He will continue killing Ukrainians.
